How does It Work?

Most sleep specialists agree that your body needs to be in a neutral position to sleep comfortably. This is absolutely correct. Most of them think that this means that your head must be level when sleeping on your side. This is absolutely false. Until now nobody has figured out exactly what it means to be in a neutral position when you sleep. As a result of incorrectly applying this data we see all kinds of funny shaped pillows and form fitting memory foam mattresses on the market now.

To see what it means to sleep in a neutral position we have to figure out what neutral is when laying down on your side. It is NOT the same as when you are standing up. You can test this for yourself. Stand with your leg, hip and shoulder touch a wall as if it were a bed you were laying on. If you relax your whole body you will get an idea of how far away from the bed your head needs to be in order to remain in a neutral position.

This is way above level. This is the correct height for your head if you are sleeping on a surface this firm. You can see that pillows which get your head level are not getting it neutral. Level is still leaving it way too low.

Obviously then your body position for sleeping depends on the firmness of your mattress and also involves your pillow height.

Do you think that everyone's neutral position is going to be the same height from the bed? It is not. Do you think that your head would need to be at a different height for different sleeping surfaces, like a firm mattress vs. a medium mattress? Yes, it would. In fact, if your mattress is not firm enough then you can't get your head to stay at the correct height so this sleep system will not work for you.

Correct body positioning starts with

I love Dr. Porter’s mattress. Somehow he has managed to combine firmness with cushiness, and the result is that it supports my back beautifully, while giving such a luxurious feel. It is the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on.

I have had serious back problems for the last year. A bulging disc and nerve impingement at S1 have been the cause of excruciating pain, crippling, and numbness. This mattress is helping take my pain away between treatments. It seems to align my spine. I fell down a couple of weeks ago and thought I would really be hurting for days. I went from a very firm mattress (a pillow-top turned upside-down because Dr. Porter said I shouldn’t sleep on a pillow-top). So when I got Dr. Porters mattress. . . Nice! It is so comfortable. Now I don’t wake up stiff, which I like best of all. I used to wake up so stiff I would have to take a hot shower to loosen up in the morning. I am very happy about this. I have found this mattress helpful. I used to wake up every 2 hours or so, and now I wake up less often, about every 4 or 5 hours. That’s a good improvement…because I have (sleep) apnea. The mask seal ends up coming undone, so I wake up, not because the mattress is uncomfortable, but so I can reset the mask. I have enjoyed this mattress! I sleep better on this mattress than on any other I have ever had. I grew up with a Sealy Posturepedic, and it was a good mattress, but I like Dr. Porter’s better.
